My husband and I have had many conversations about how much screen time is okay for kids. Are they going to become couch potatoes if they watch too much TV? Will they become addicted to playing apps on my phone or iPad? We normally don’t watch too much TV so I have never really worried about it. However, my children are one and two so I don’t even think we’ve hit that age where they want to watch TV and play different apps, and I’m sure that will change soon.
I have recently heard about this app, Kidloland. I was skeptical because I didn’t want my son glued to an iPad all day long. At the same time, I have been hearing how educational some of these apps can be so I wanted to look into it. I checked it out after he went to bed one night and I have to say that I was pretty impressed by how much they had to offer. My son who is two could play some of the games and understand it, but we could easily have this app for years and there will always be more age appropriate games as he gets older.
Another thing that I was skeptical about at first was that you have to download the games in the app before you want to play them. However, now I think that’s a spectacular idea. Let me explain. You know how I just said that this app has a ton of different games for several different ages? Well, there is no way my two year old is going to understand all the games right now. And when my son is older, he is not going to want to play the same games he is playing now. Because you are able to download the individual games in the app, it allows you to pick and choose which games you are using now, and only download those. You can save some space on your phone or iPad. And when my son is ready for more advanced games I can delete the ones he is using now and download the other ones. It’s pretty genius actually.
A lot of times I will put on a movie for my son after I put my daughter to bed. One night, instead of putting on a movie, I gave my son my iPad with the Kidloland app. Now I didn’t know if he was going to look at me like I was crazy or if he was going to play with it. I was so surprised when he started flipping through the app and playing different songs! My son loves animals so he was so excited about all the songs that had dancing animals. I was able to get my work done for about 30 minutes while he was playing with the Kidloland app.
I have to say that my view on young children playing with games on a device has definitely changed. If I can get my son to interact with an educational app instead of staring blankly at a movie, I will call that a win. Now I don’t think I am going to download every app I can, but I will continue to let me son use this Kidloland app occasionally. I think it definitely has enough features that my son is not going to get bored for 30 minutes. Also, since this particular app has games for many different ages, we can have this app for a while before I need to start looking into other apps.
Here is some information about the Kidloland app that my son likes for those of you who are curious.
There are some free features, but you also have to pay to get access to the whole app.
- Nursery Rhymes
- ABC songs
- Months of the Year
- Water Animals
- Animal Sounds
- Christmas Songs
- Additional Nursery Rhymes
If you were once skeptical about screen time like me, I would encourage you to give it a try. I recommend starting with this Kidloland app, especially if you only want one or two apps for different occasions. Here are some ways you can get the app:
Google Play Store (Nursery Rhymes For Kids)
Amazon Appstore (KidloLand)
