Growing up, I wasn’t always a fan of Christmas. I am not a big fan of surprises, so receiving unknown presents was not always fun for me. I know, I was a weird kid. I also realized that even if you didn’t like a present that someone got you, it was polite to act like you liked it and thank them for it anyway. However, one thing I always looked forward to each Christmas was our Christmas traditions. On Christmas morning after we opened all the presents, my dad would make eggs benedict. It is still one of my favorite breakfasts to this day! Now that I am a mom, I am starting to think about the importance of creating christmas traditions with toddlers — or with a one and a two year old.
My son absolutely loves “helping” me with various tasks. It truly gives him job to help. So I thought, why not create christmas traditions where he gets to help? And I love food so the tradition definitely needs to involve food. This year I thought it would be great for us to make a small Christmas breakfast together before we open presents! We had to test out some recipes first of course to make sure we will love it come Christmas day.
Every morning I ask get my son up from his bed and I ask him what he wants to breakfast. And every morning he replies, “cereal breakfast”. The kid LOVES cereal. I can’t complain either — it makes my job in the morning pretty easy. He also loves eating “big” yogurt with dad. So when we were at Target and Brody picked out Honey Bunches of Oats®, I knew exactly what we were going to do for our Christmas tradition.
We picked out his favorite yogurt — strawberry of course, with chunks of strawberry. He helped me pour it into a bowl and only spilled a little. I am calling it a win! Then for the best part, the Honey Bunches of Oats®. I also let him help pour the cereal and while their wasn’t any spilling, I would say the ratio of yogurt to cereal was a little off. Although since cereal is his favorite, maybe it’s exactly what he wanted!
I thought this would be more for him, but I actually had a ton of fun too! Having children has made me realize that it’s more about who you’re with, rather than what you’re doing. Being with family makes any activity fun!
