One of the most common questions I get asked is how I was able to stay home with my kids and I also get asked how to start a mom blog. You can read a little more about my birth story and how we came to our decision here. We don’t have extra money just lying around, so it took a little bit of work to make it happen. In order to help us out financially, I started a mom blog! I didn’t know if it would actually lead to anything, but I am so happy that it did! I now have what I call my passion project, and that’s helping other moms become a mompreneur!
When anyone asks me about my blogging journey and how to start a mom blog, I always tell them that I wish I had started a blog sooner! It’s been an amazing journey and I’ve been able to help our family tremendously, all while staying home and raising my kids.
How To Start A Mom Blog
Although I have to admit that it hasn’t been all easy. There are days when I work through every naptime and stay up late after bedtime in order to get work done. It’s exhausting. But it’s also rewarding knowing that I’m able to stay home with my kids every day — and that’s the reason I do everything.
Now if I can start a mom blog, so can you. You just need to do it. I can’t tell you how long I thought that I should start a mom blog. It took me way too long to take the plunge.
And here’s an easy guide so you have no reason not to start a mom blog!
Pick a niche
While I think that everyone should start a blog — well almost everyone — I also think there are certain things you need to do in order to have a successful blog. Anyone can start a blog, but there are few that are actually able to monetize their blog.
The first thing I want you to do is to really think about what you want to blog about. Who are the people you want to read your blog? Do you want to be a fashion blogger? Or maybe you want to blog about technology. Whatever it is, pick a niche and stay with it. While there are blogs that blog a little about everything, I highly suggest that you narrow your focus so people understand what your blog is about.
I love Bluehost and I highly recommend them. I haven’t had issues with them and I really appreciate their 24/7 support whenever I need it.
I know what you’re thinking. Why do you have to pay for hosting when you can just start a blog on Blogger? Don’t do it. If you are really interested in monetizing your blog, I highly recommend that you setup and WordPress blog and pay through hosting (I recommend Bluehost). I also recommend that you get a custom theme, but we can talk about that later.
You should really only need the basic option which is only $2.75/month. Like I said, super cheap.
There are a lot of other hosting companies out there as well, so here is why I like Bluehost.
-Bluehost is an extremely inexpensive option
-You can get a FREE blog domain!
-If your blog gets to the point where you want to do advertisements, affiliate links, etc., it is all extremely easy with Bluehost (trying to do this with Blogger is difficult and sometimes not even allowed.
This part of the step is extremely important so PLEASE DON’T SKIP THIS! When you decide what domain name you want for your blog, make sure to check all of the social media platforms and check that your domain name is available as a username. For example, when I picked my domain name, Maintaining Me, I checked that I could get maintainingme or maintainingmeblog on all social media channels.
Install WordPress on Bluehost
This part is so easy that I probably don’t even need to write about it, but I will anyways.
You will receive an email from Bluehost with a link to your cPanel. There is an image that says, “one click install.” Find and select “Wordpress” and then click on the start button to begin the installation. Next you will need to find the menu for the domain you want. Lastly, click on advanced options so you can choose your username and password. The only advice I have is to make sure you change it away from admin as it’s too generic and can get hacked.
Install a theme
Now you can pick a theme. There are a ton of free ones you can choose from, but I highly suggest if you want your blog to look professional, that you get a custom theme. I use Bluchic and absolutely love all their themes. They also have great support which is nice since I’m not super techy. They make some amazing feminine themes that you will love. I have the Paisley theme on this blog and I don’t plan on changing it!
Write your first post
Well you can write your first one, but I actually suggest that you get about 10 published before you really start marketing your blog. This will give you a little street cred and make your blog look a little more established. It’s not a necessity, but it’s one step that I always suggest.
Invest In Courses
Just like you would invest in training at your corporate job, it’s a great idea to invest in courses for this job. If you want blogging to become your full time job, you need to treat it as such. Here are the courses that I have tried and can recommend. They all have information that you cannot find elsewhere.
Just A Girl And Her Blog – Building A Framework Course
This course will help you with everything! From the technical side of things to setting up your Pinterest account to drive huge traffic, Abby has you covered.
What Mommy Does – Blog Traffic E-book
This book will help you learn how to drive traffic from everywhere. She goes through different platform and outlines how best to drive traffic. She also talks about monetization.
This ebook is about Pinterest. More specifically, how to drive traffic to your blog using Pinterest — without using a scheduler! Yes she does is all manually and her strategies are outlined completely in this book.
Once your blog is up and running and starts to grow, you may need a couple other things on your blog.
For your newsletter, you will need an email marketing company. I recommend Convertkit I started with Mailchimp because it was one of the cheaper options, and it was a disaster. I will not recommend them, but I understand if you need to start there in the beginning. I very quickly changed to Convertkit and I’m in love. It’s much easier, and it’s definitely the next step I needed to take to help my email list grow.
We will talk about Pinterest in another post, but you absolutely need Pinterest optimized images with every single post. This means it needs to be a longer image with words and pictures on it. I am not a graphic designer nor do I have the skills to be. Canva is my best friend in this area. I used the free version for a while, but once I started the paid membership, I realized how much easier it made my life and I will never go back. It’s totally worth the money.
While were on the Pinterest trail, let’s talk about a Pinterest scheduler. I use Boardbooster and love it. Pinterest is becoming the number one source of traffic for blogs. Now we are normal people and don’t have the time to be pinning all day long. Every blogger I know has a Pinterest scheduler. This means that they spend 1 hour a week pinning, and then your scheduler will spit them out the rest of the week. It can even loop pins and spit out pins during specific hours and specific days. Boardbooster is genuis.
And there you have it! Go ahead and start a mom blog!
